The Green Dot
Change the Symbol. Change the System.
A brief byTwo°Creative + The Brand Identity

For 30 years we have regularly seen The Green Dot symbol, however very few of us know its true meaning. Rather than indicating that the product or material it is on is recyclable, it, in fact, means something else entirely. Created in 1990, The Green Dot symbol merely means the company or brand has joined The Green Dot Scheme – indicating a financial contribution made towards a recycling system or causes, but does not mean their product is recyclable or recycled.

The brief presented sought to redesign The Green Dot symbol to establish that the product is not recyclable and differentiate it from similar symbols which frequently appear on packaging. Mandatories included colour variations of Green, White and Black with no arrows and no cycle utilised in the design.

My submission is a reinterpretation of the 'no' or 'anti' circle backslash symbol, creating a strong symbol that reinforces the message that the product is NOT suitable for recycling. The symbol is stark and robust enough to be scalable and easily recognisable.
